Moving Again 2012 is in full swing, and it stinks just like it always does.
I'm freaking out; my husband is frustrated with me, and Ella is dealing with the less one-on-one attention she's been getting by throwing a fit that can only be soothed by holding her and nursing for two minutes at a time every 20 minutes or so.
Which is why I've now taken to obsessing over the inconsequential.
You know how when everything is in full-swing, balls-to-the-walls bananas, and you decide to sip a cup of chamomile tea right then and there? You know how when it's crunch time, and you can't help but take a relaxing long bubble bath just because?
That's me right now.
I'm obsessing over things that have no bearing over the next week and a half. I'm researching things that really have nothing to do with moving. I'm wondering about stuff that won't help me finish packing or assist me in living out of a suitcase and the back of our car for almost a month. (Oh, did I forget to mention that little tid-bit? Yeah, I'd tell you about it, but I can't even think about it right now.)
So, today, I have questions for you. About shoes. And cloth diapers. And what you recommend making for dinner when you're cleaning out your pantry and all you have left are chick-peas, dried blueberries, and canned sauerkraut.
You know, the stuff that really matters.
***
My brother's wedding is in a few weeks, and I've decided - i.e., already own and/or purchased - to wear a royal blue pencil skirt with a champagne colored top, accented with royal blue gemstone jewelry.I have made these decisions based on the fact that it's a day wedding, but the wedding party is in tuxedos; I have to be able to nurse in the outfit, and I already own half of the necessary items.
One such item I do not own for the aforementioned ensemble is shoes.
Like, I can't wear black shoes. And I don't own a lot of other options.
So, what would you do? Silver shoes? (The jewelry has silver accents.) Go with the royal blue theme and hope like heck someone sells a shoe with some sort of blue accent? (That just sounds ugly.)
Seriously, what shoes do I need with this outfit?
***
It has been brought to my attention that the area we are moving to has hard water. This isn't normally a big deal, but for a cloth-diapering mama, it can be calamitous.
Basically, it means your diapers may never fully rinse out and therefore, can be left with a horrid stench.
I've been doing my research, and I've found several options. (Using a water softener, baking soda, vinegar, a hot soak, etc.)
None of them seems particularly fool-proof.
So, any cloth-diapering moms out there who deal with hard water? How do you do it? What do you use?

The hubs and I are thinking of buying into a well-known online stores' "prime" deal. You know the one. Where you spend $79 a year and get free two-day shipping on basically everything you order?
We're basically considering it because our new home is located in a smaller town than either of us have ever lived in, and getting out to get certain things we use a lot - a very specific dog food, essential oils, green paper products, homeopathic remedies and vitamins, and other types of things - may prove a lot more difficult in our new Georgia house.
I won't lie; I also like the idea of being able to order everything but food online and having it show up at my doortwo days later. Especially considering that the aforementioned well-known online store is competitive or lower priced than almost any retail outlet out there.
So, my question for you all is: Do you use something like this? What do you think? Do you recommend it? And if you do, what kinds of stuff do you order on it?

Besides moving and my brother's wedding, we're also going to spend a week in Northwest Arkansas visiting my in-laws while we move. (Now do you see why we're living out of a suitcase and car for about a month?)And this winter, my friends? Well, it's been weird all over the country. But from what I can tell, it's been especially wonky close to the Midwest.
My mother-in-law said her neighbor was in shorts one day and then the ground was frozen the next.
So, I don't know what to pack for Ella.
Should I expect snow? Cold rain? Sun? Warm breezes?
Help a Southern sister out.
***
So, say you're out somewhere with your baby. A play-group. The community park. The grocery store.Another child approaches you and starts toward Ella.
You know how toddlers are. They pat and touch and get really close to babies because they are genuinely fascinated by them. They mean no harm.
Except when they have runny, snotty noses and then cough directly in your child's face.
Seriously, this has been my reality for the last month.
Every stinking toddler around this place seems to have a cold.
And they all are obsessed with Ella. At work, Ella gets coughed on at least 18 times a day.
Today, I had her and my friend's baby, who I was watching, on a the swings behind my house, and some 4 year old boy with snot all over his face, whom I've never even seen before, ran up and started poking at them.
Meanwhile, his mother was right behind him and didn't say a thing. She let him cough-spit on my kid and poke at my friend's with his snot-covered hand. (L, if you are reading this, he actually never made contact. I managed to finagle the swing away from said snot-covered hand just in time.)
But still, the mother didn't say anything. Furthermore, no mothers say anything.
They show up everywhere, let their kids germ-spread all over my kid, and say nothing.
Let's not even dwell on the fact that they shouldn't have their kid out in the first place. They already do; it's too late for that. (Plus, I do realize that sometimes, a little runny nose is not an excuse for you not to go to, say, the grocery store. Everyone's got to eat.)
So, what do you say? To the toddler? To the mother?
I don't want to be rude, but I am over it.
Ella, my perfectly healthy baby, has started coughing tonight. Girlfriend is congested. And I'm not happy at all.
I'm surprised it took this long, in fact. She's been exposed to so much crap, it amazes me she just has a little cough.
Still, not cool. Not. Cool.
Give me the words, fellow mamas. What do I do to make it stop?

Happy Wednesday, everyone!

As for the shoes, why don't you choose a nude heel since you're wearing a champagne colored blouse?
Something like this:http://www.ebay.com/itm/Steve-Madden-Nude-Tan-Platform-Patent-Leather-Caryssa-Pumps-8M-/260949787334?_trksid=p5197.m7&_trkparms=algo%3DLVI%26itu%3DUCI%26otn%3D5%26po%3DLVI%26ps%3D63%26clkid%3D6183890202568939895
Shoes - go nude. Those seem to be the hottest right now & conveniently come in handy when you have weird colors to match. I agree with New Girl on Post - a nude patent leather. Kohl's has some, as I'm sure do most shoes stores.
As far as Amazon Prime, I think if you're a "student", you can get AP free for a year. You may want to check in to it, but I believe the only proof you need for being a student is a school e-mail. I don't know about you, but Clemson allows you to keep your school e-mail as long as you want if you convert it to gmail. Might be something to look in to, and then if you don't use it as much as you thought, you wouldn't have to renew it next year.
Amazon prime? Yeah, we love it. You can get it for free, I believe, if you sign up for Amazon Mom. As long as you make enough qualifying purchases, your two day shipping should be free.
I'll echo some previous comments, get nude heels! DSW has a ton on their website. Also, I have that $79 membership. Worth every penny! We have definitely gotten our money's worth.
Snotty noses? Both of my kids had them the ENTIRE time they were teething. Did it mean they were sick? Nope. Well, maybe they were the whole time. I dunno. My kids go to day care, and hubby and I are both high school teachers (you KNOW those turkeys lick their papers before turning them in!) But, my 4 year old is never sick any more, and I firmly believe it's because she was exposed to everything when she was a baby.
However, when an obviously sick kid is about to touch mine, I tell them straight up, "don't touch!" Usually, the moms will echo that, and it's not a problem. Don't worry about ticking someone off. Protect your child!
I second signing up for Amazon Mom..I believe you get three months free and then can 'earn' up to a year free shipping through your purchases. We ended up buying E's convertible carseat on Amazon. I order some of our produce online too -- you can check out front door produce. I don't know if it'll fit within your needs, but its all locally grown. And, if we get it here in Sav. I would think you could as well.
Good luck with the move! I remember when we moved to Hawaii it took a little over a month to get our household goods..that was all kinds of fun.
Becky
I would pack a pair of jeans, sweats, and shorts. Our weather (in NC) has been so weird this year. I have to turn on the AC in the day, then the heat at night.
I like the idea of the nude shoes.
I like Carolyn's idea about the sick kids. I'm always afraid of offending someone, but I guess my first priority is keeping my kid healthy. They'll just have to get over it. Easier said than done for me. :)
Good luck with everything!
Hi lady! Haven't commented in a while, but have been kind of out of the loop with everything.
My two cents:
Shoes? I like the nude idea but I'd pick a nude with a sheen to it.
Hard water? I've heard the water softeners work well.
Prime? Go for it. Two day delivery in a rural (not sure if you'd be considered rural or not) is worth it alone. Plus, if you can do the mom program & get it for free, totally worth it!
NWA? Pack a little of everything. Pants, sweaters, etc. If it gets hot can she hang out in a onesie w/o pants?
Snotty noses? As a mom you have every right to not let a child you perceive to be sick cough or sneeze on or touch your child. I would think a simple, "no touching" with an explanation to the mom that you don't want to expose your child to germs would suffice.
Long comments make up for lack of commenting, right? :)
Happy you guys are getting closer to where you want to be!
xo
I use the prime and mom programs and with subscribe and save you can save up to 30% I get 2 months of diapers for 26$ I also get my all natural dish soap cheap and baby shampoo. I highly recommend it
Ahhh, that last minuet moving stress. Not a fan of it at all! Hang in there Brittany and do what you need to go to cope. Take that bubble bath if it helps. =)
First of all, I so relate--when I'm stresses about something major, I often have meltdowns about really small insignificant stuff instead. I don't know why, but it's a definite pattern!
I ditto everyone on the nude-ish shoe. I saw these at Target and they were cute and on clearance!
http://www.target.com/p/Women-s-Xhilaration-Tacey-Ruffle-Platform-Sandals-Blush-Patent/-/A-13693394#?lnk=sc_qi_detailimage
I suggest nude shoes as well. Just google royal blue dress and see the images of models in royal blue dresses. Most have are wearing nude shoes or brown.
As for Snotty noses - tell the mom or kid a little white lie - "Sorry no touching, Ella just got over being sick" Or "Ella is sick, so you might want to keep your distance". Or be honest and say, we are germ freaks here, do you mind using hand sanitizers?
And relax about moving (Easier said than done), remember you still get to be with your family and everything will work out. Good Luck!
NUDE pumps, lady! Target has some.
And YES to amazon prime!
Nude heels, definitely. Get Prime, especially since you already know that the small town isn't gonna have the things you listed. For tge Midwest, I'd pack lots of layer-able clothes. As for snotty-nosed kids? No answer there, sorry!
I hope I'm not being redundant but get NUDE PUMPS. They rock.
Amazon Prime is incredible. If you aren't already signed up for Amazon Mom, sign up and you can get a free trial of Amazon Prime.
www.myfridgefood.com Seriously. That website rocks. You check off the foods you DO have and it populates all the recipes you can make with it.
So I am an Amazon Mom member and got a free year of Prime. I hear that doesn't happen anymore when you sign up and there is a huge wait list to even become a member. BUT?! As soon as my year is up I'm getting Prime. It's SOOOOO worth it. I order most of S' baby things from there - feeding, toys, swaddles, etc. Free 2 day shipping and no tax. Can't beat that:-)
Glad I'm not the only Type-A that when faced with a million things for a major life change sits down and watches tv like nothing major is going on in her life.
Now for answers...I vote for the nude pumps too. They're hot and I saw a pair in Target last week.
I don't know about hard water.
Do the Amazon Prime thing because it is wonderful.
As for the snotty nosed kid thing, I think I'd say something. I'd just ask the kid politely to just wave and say hello.
Finally what to wear in NWA aka 2 hours from my hometown...sorry sister, but you're looking at layering it up. It's a pain in the butt but someone's gotta do it. Also, NWA and Oklahoma for that matter are NOT midwest...thankyouverymuch! I'll be happy to guide you to history books that say otherwise if you have the nerve to protest. ;)
I'm gonna say nude pumps, and as a true Midwestern girl (I live in the great state of Missouri) here is my suggestion for clothing your baby in the U.S. of A's most bi-polar states: I love three piece outfits for Emma...you know the ones that come with pants, a t-shirt or long sleeved shirt, and a jacket? Yep, you can't go wrong! If it's nice you can take off the pants and the jacket, and if it's chilly, you can bundle her up in all three. We own lots of 3 piece outfits around these parts, and they work the best for us. I hope this helps! :)
So, um, I'm kinda excited. I have zero fashion sense but I was going to suggest shiny nude pumps, with the disclaimer that I'm fashion-disabled. And everyone else said the same thing! Yay!
I don't particulary have any fashion sense but I agree with the other girl, nude pumps would be the way to go.
Sorry for the crazy midwest weather. Last week it was in the 50's but this weekend it's supposed to be below freezing! I'd like the warmer stuff to stick around!
Go for the prime! I got a year free because I had a university email. Then when my year was up they offered me this year for $27 so I took it! I'd see if there is a way to get it free for a year first.
Boy, you sound like me whenever it comes to big life changes. I think my M.O. is to sweat the small stuff as a means of helping me avoid/deal with the big stuff. Weird, but I do it every time, and every time I wonder why I'm doing it!
As for the $79 membership, we have it. Yes, in NZ, which actually makes sense for us for 2 reasons - (1) the free Kindle book that I can borrow each month, and (2) the free TV shows that I can watch online rather than paying an arm and a leg for cable in NZ. I also bought several things from them while in the US and the free shipping was wonderful.
In regards to the hard water, this may actually be an ice-breaker for you when you move to your new home. Maybe ask some of the other moms, find out which ones cloth diaper and see what they do (could be a good way to find other like-minded women!).
And about the sick kids issue, I guess my thoughts are "what would I want someone to say to me if Joe was the one with the runny nose?" If Joe had a fever, vomiting, diarrhea - no way would be out on the playground or at the library, you know? But a runny nose is something that little kids get. Joe hasn't had very many (I think only 1 or 2 in the nearly 8 months of his life) but I'm sure he'll have plenty once he's older. In that situation, I would try to stay as on top of it as possible, make sure that he wasn't coughing all over little kids (and having a hacking, persistent, miserable cough is a reason to stay home, in my opinion, but a small cough isn't) and if he had a runny nose, I'd be chasing after him with tissues. But if I missed it, I would want someone to say something to Joe like, "Oh, honey - you've got a runny nose! Let's see if your mommy has a tissue" and then look my way, try to get my attention, etc. Or if he was coughing to say something like, "Poor thing - you've got a cough" loud enough for me to hear. I think that most parents if they hear that will realize, "Oh hey - my kid is coughing/snotty and is all over this other baby" and do something about it. If I say something like that or try to get the parent's attention and THEN they don't do anything, I'd just pick up Joe and move elsewhere on the playground. And I've had to do that just recently where a toddler would NOT leave him alone and his mom wasn't doing a thing about it. We ended up going home, which stunk, but she wasn't picking up on any of my cues, and frankly she didn't look like she care. The stuff that really worries me is when I read articles about baby's bumping their noses on swing sets and coming in contact with drug-resistant flesh-eating staph bacteria... and now I've given you something else to worry about!
Sorry for the huge, run-on comment!
Oh my word - that really was a LONG comment! So sorry!
Can't help with the diapering, Brit...but as a fellow gal living in the boonies I am a HUGE fan of Prime. You get a free loan on Kindle every month too and online streaming of movies and tv series (which isn't perfect...but would help you save if you wanted to ditch cable/sat).
Good luck dear and I'm so excited that you will be closer to the FLA boarder again!
Amazon Prime- DO IT! It's a lifesaver for last minute gifts or days when your baby is sick and you are almost out of diapers but really don't want to leave the house. Plus, who doesn't like to get things in the mail?!
I agree with everyone about the nude pumps FOR SURE. For the diapers - I would say using water softener and hot soaks - we use a diaper service up here but that's what they use. I've never heard of Amazon Prime (but I live in Canada so that's probably why lol). Weatherwise, I would bring clothing that can be layered, short sleeve onesies, long sleeve tshirts and sweaters.
And as far as the sick kid - I have no idea - I had that problem earlier this week and the kid took one of Nora's toys and proceeded to chew it and cough and sneeze on it. I had to wash it as soon as I got home. Good luck in saying something to the other mom - I always feel like I'm the bad person.
M late in commenting, but we have hard water and we just use a water softener along with detergent every wash. I haven't been doing cloth full-time that long (3 months?), but we haven't had any problems at all!
I LOVE having Amazon Prime!!! I order all kinds of stuff on it, but ALWAYS my toilet paper, paper towels, and soap. I signed up for Prime Student using my college email, got it free for one year, and then it let me renew at 1/2 price. Definitely worth looking into whether or not they still offer that. Oh, and I vote nude shoes too :-)
I absolutely LOVE having a prime membership with amazon. I use it all the time and it definitely makes my life much more convenient.
As for shoes I am going to go against the crowd and find some great champagne pumps. Try Off Broadway or DSW. If you don't mind the splurge, Nordstroms or Dillards. If your area has any of those stores. If you own the other pieces splurging on a nice pair of shoes is worth it.
