The Water is Gonna Getcha

Duck!

Do you not see them?

Duck!

Those kids have water guns!

And shaving cream!

And, dear Lord above, did I just see one sprint by brandishing a can of Silly String?

Duck! And then run for your lives!

Why do you think I'm here, kneeling behind my classroom desk? Wearing a swimsuit under my dress and cardigan? Desperately wishing I owned some kind of cloak of invisibility?

It's Water Day for the seniors here at school.

And they are out for blood.

Or, rather, one soaked, messy teacher.

Because, as they see it, I have it coming.

For every paper I assigned over a long weekend. For every letter grade I took off for late work. For every eraser I threw at a sleeping student's head. (Oh, I kid. Kinda.)

For all of it, I have it coming.

I deserve the smack of a busted water balloon, the smear of food-coloring-enhanced water squirts, and the embarrassment of walking around after the fact looking like some sad, last-place winner of a wet T-shirt contest.

So, yes, I'm back here. Ducking. Hiding from the kids running by screaming, "Where's Mrs. C? I've got the shaving cream!"

Oh, dear heavens, I'm scared. Remind me why I do this for a living again?

Because that kid I failed in the third nine weeks just shot by wielding a water gun the likes of which I've never seen.

And my bathing suit totally doesn't match their Silly String.

Happy Friday everyone! Hope yours is a little less wet and messy than mine!

As scary as that sounds for YOU it sounds like lots of fun for THEM! I wish we had had water day at my HS!

I think today would be the perfect day to leave early. Haha! Your school sounds like such a blast...mine would have NEVER allowed anything like that!

Holy cow, I have never heard of such a thing! We were banned from water guns at school--they were considered "weapons".

I would have called in sick!

Don't hide and go out and have some fun too. Who knows seeing you with a 'Come-What-May- attitude, the kids might just choose not to target you at all!

Go.

Back.

(and have so much fun!)

So tell me, does all this make the day go by faster or slower? Cuz that's what really matters!! Thought of you in a bathing suit ducking behind your desk makes me giggle though, like a ... school girl :)

Water day?! I have never heard of this! It's probably really fun for the students, but really traumatic for the teachers!!

That would be a day I wouldn't go and another reason you get an extra pat on the back for being a high school teacher!

Oh, water day! We used to do this at Day Camp and I always dreaded it. That and the shaving cream fight. Totally awful.

Water Day? You guys are very brave. Our middle schoolers tried to have a mosh pit in the halls a few weeks ago between classes and even though we found out about it in time to stop it from really starting it was madness. I can only imagine what it would be like if we let them come in with water guns and balloons to get us with. You and your fellow teachers deserve an award for that level of bravery.

I do not that I have a good enough sense of humor for water day. No ma'am.

Haha! I hope you survived. Happy weekend!

Now I so curious how your day went. I hope you didn't get soaked too bad. We never had a water day when I was in highschool - probably for the better I am sure. But sounds like a fun tradition. As long as the water stays FAR FAR away from the yearbooks. I always feared that someone would bring a water gun on yearbook signing day and ruin my book. I am still a yearbook nerd after all this years. Yearbook for life, yo!

that sounds like so much fun (not for you though) I hope you took pics!

Haha, we had a day similar to that when I was a senior. Good luck on making it out of there dry.

Oh my gosh, I hope that they didn’t get you too bad! It sounds like a fun day at school for the kids though. Thank goodness there are just a few short weeks left.

P.S. You totally deserved the award I gave you and I really do think that you are an awesome person and writer.
