Call me a party pooper.
Call me a Springtime Scrooge.
But I hate April Fool's Day.
Hate it with the passion of a thousand-million jokesters laughing at a whoopy cushion.
I don't know what it is about this ad-hoc, unofficial holiday, but it bugs me.
I don't find it funny when people tell you your shoe's untied. And it's not. April Fools!
I don't find it funny when people pretend like they're mad at you. And they're not. April Fools!
And I don't find it funny when your students tell you they lost the school's most expensive video camera while out on a class assignment. When they didn't. April Fools!
When I was single, I used to give my then-boyfriend plenty of advanced warning not to pull the old, "Baby, I love you. Will you marry me?"... Just kidding! April Fools!" trick.
He was the kind of jerk that did stuff like that. And I was of the emotional bent to get wrecked by it.
So come March 1, I basically threatened his life if he so much as mentioned "love," "marriage," "April," and "fool" anywhere near each other throughout the next 30 days.
Because I'd be crushed. And furious - lit with the fire of a woman snubbed. I figured he deserved fair warning about my disorder - a distinct aversion and severe reaction to the celebration of cruel practical jokes.
But with that part of my life behind me, I still don't know what it is about the holiday that bothers me.
After all, I like a good surprise, and I take great joy in a funny joke. But being blatantly tricked by somebody you ostensibly know and likely care about for no good reason just gets under my skin in a way that even I can't control.
It seems insensitive; it seems mean. It seems like, underneath it all, you want me to run to my bedroom crying because I fell for it. Again.
And I worry.
Is there something wrong with me? Am I missing some key component of the human psyche? Did God skip me when he handed out the humor gene? Does this make me a stuffy, cruel, conservative fuddy-duddy? Are you all judging me right now because I'm openly admitting that I hate a fun-loving, silly, harmless, national holiday?
Because I am gullible. I do fall for silly jokes. Again and again.
And I don't find them funny. Again and again.
Last year, I fell for every blogger around who posted a whole "I feel it's time to end this blog for my own safety...JUST KIDDING!" post on April 1.
I actually got worked up about a few, worried about my friends and concerned for their well-being.
But when I saw the big, old, tell-tale "April Fool's!" at the end of each post, I almost screamed. And blushed a profuse shade of red all by myself, sitting behind my computer screen.
I'd fallen for it.
Again.
I try again, every year, to embrace the holiday.
I force a fake laugh when I find the proverbial "Kick Me" sign taped to my back. (Thank you, ninth-grade classmates!)
But I'm a poor actress. And my guffaw is obviously staged.
Because I just don't like April Fool's Day. It makes me want to kick all the jokesters of the world right in the back.
No sign required.

P.S. Happy Thursday everyone! And Happy April 1 - a perfectly normal day that deserves no observation or celebration in the slightest.
P.P.S. I know I'm being cranky, but I'm still sleep-deprived. I'll be back tomorrow with more cheer!

I agree with you 100%! I always feel a bit uncomfortable all day, especially amidst the pranksters at work, and thought I was the only one. Happy Thursday and good luck catching up on your sleep.
You are not alone - I hate April Fool's, don't like practical jokes and pranks, etc. Frankly, I don't even care a whole lot for sarcasm, when it's directed towards others. I'm sarcastic and silly about myself, but to be sarcastic to someone else is - to me - just a way to be unkind behind the veil of humor.
I don't think I'm sense-of-humor deficient, I just don't think those things are funny, ha! :) Being silly? Being goofy? Having fun together? AWESOME. Tricking someone on purpose? Not awesome.
One of my girlfriends posted on fb yesterday as her status, "Jessica thanks you in advance for not asking her if she's STILL pregnant the next time you see her. ;)" And so then about 10 of her 'friends' commented, saying 'hilarious' things about how she's been pregnant for "SOOOOOO long" and 14 pound babies, "You haven't had that baby yet?" and "I'm going to call you every day and ask you now." See, stuff like that just isn't funny to me. It's sort of like parents who say "What good are children if you can't embarrass them?", which I heard all the time as a child and teenager.
Sorry to pull this card...but it's just not loving. As evidenced by the fact that the person you're doing it to does not feel loved. ;)
Sorry for the soapbox - this has been a rough week, and after thw awful start this morning has had (thanks to my neighbors and their dogs) I'm just as ready to close the chapter on another April Fool's day as you are!
Hope your students are kind to you - Happy New Month Day!!! :D
Your blog is so much fun!!! Happy Thursday and I hope no one pulls anything too bad on me (I am ridiculously gullible especially to my boyfriend's amusement! :)) xx

It's a irrelevant holiday for children, it's kind of up there with St. Patricks Day, Mardi Gras or Cinco de Mayo, at one time they were fun now, I could careless!
I think April Fools jokes are only truly funny when you are a little kid...UNLESS the kids are doing the jokes...since im off this week I dont have 5 year olds telling me my shoes are untied! Thank goodness!
I love getting my mom going...she's the best and I have already fell for one blogger April Fools joke.
I totally agree with you and there is nothing, i repeat nothing wrong with you! It's funny because i looked at the date today with dread because i hate those jokes too! Hope it goes well for you at school :)
My Mamaw pulled April Fool's jokes on us every year growing up...of course, they were little things and she immediately told us she was kidding, but we loved it.
Now what I DON'T like is when people insist on carrying on as if it is true the whole day, only to say April Fools after you've had a long conversation about whatever it is and even called their bluff. That's just being a liar.
My April Fool's usually insist of me calling the hubby and telling him that I've spend an obscene amount of money on something, then saying "April Fools!" My logic is that it kinda softens the blow if I do spend a 'little' money. :)
Haha, I hear ya. We never really got into the April fools holiday. From time to time, it would be something little but not a full blown joke, it's just mean! Here's to hoping you don't get tricked too many times today!
I don't care for April Fools Day either! I just don't like surprises...AT ALL!
I don't like the day either.
I think it depends on the situation. I like pranks if they're funny. I don't like any of the serious stuff at all.
I’m not a fan April Fool’s Day either and I’m already gullible enough to begin with, so this “holiday” doesn’t help people like me. My friend Nick and his wife were even demented enough to get married on April Fool’s Day (I think that was his idea more than her idea). I’m glad I’m working from home today. I see that even Google got in on the fun (Topeka).
I've never liked it either. I'm way too gullible and believe everything. I feel like I need to be extra cautious on this day. Oh well it's the first day of my birthday month lol.
You're going to be sorry that you posted this. It is now my official life goal to April Fools you every single year until you start to love it.
By the way, your neighbor just called me. He said there is a big turtle in your backyard and it's trying to bite Marvin and Fish.
April Fools.
I feel the SAME way. Mainly because I don't want to be pranked! =)
I agree with you. I hate April Fools. I just don't see the point and I hate being tricked into thinking things. I mean who wants to joke around about serious stuff??!?!
I've read so many blogs today that have serious stuff said and then end it with April Fools! I was truly heart broken for them until I read that! lol It's like the boy who cried wolf! I just dont get it.
and the "I'm pregnant" thing on this day when they aren't really pisses me off.
Although I did freak my family out by getting "divorced on facebook" hahaha that was kind of funny. :)
honestly, wtf kind of bf says 'will you marry me? april fools' what i giant asswipe. just saying.
AMEN SISTA! I hate all these stupid April fools day jokes! ugh! I have fallen for every one of them too.
I agree! April Fools is a stupid pointless day. Not cool.
Eh, I'm not a fan either. Bah humbug (or whatever a Springtime Scrooge is supposed to say)!
We can be sticks in the mud together. I hate this day. It's pointless.
Guess what.....I had to rush home from office half day down with pain and sickness....and spent the rest of the day crying, whimpering, reading, sleeping and again crying a bit...so much for it being April 1!
Hope no one played a trick on you that day...take care
