My husband's way of reaching out

My husband has been at boot camp for 10 days.

Ten whole days that feel like they've stretched on forever.

I've cried and struggled with sleep and missed him like crazy, but I've been busy.

That helps. A lot.

And honestly, no one likes a crying high-school teacher. Or a crying fitness instructor, for that matter.

My jobs force me to toughen up and take it.

So I have.

But that didn't stop me from gasping aloud when I found a package on my doorstep yesterday. From Navy Boot Camp. From my husband.

Much like last week's tulip blessing, I ran pell-mell into my house and tore into the box.

And just like last week's gift, what I found hit my nose before it hit my line of vision.

Except this week's surprise wasn't so good.

Before I'd even torn through the package, I smelled them: Dirty socks. Stale male underwear. A stained T-shirt.

Oh, ick.

Sure enough, there they were. In the box, the packaged I'd forgotten I was going to receive: A pile of the only things my husband brought to boot camp with him.

The clothes on his back.

Or, rather, the stinky, smelly clothes on his back.

I stared at them.

They stared back at me, challenging me with an obstinate-looking grease stain displayed prominently on his worn-in jeans.

I didn't know what to say; I didn't know what to do. So...

... I laughed.

Because, literally, my husband had mailed me a pile of stinking laundry.

The very first attempt at communication I received from my beloved sailor was a a pile of clothes that - it has to be said - weren't even folded.

Heck, they weren't even semi-arranged.

They were thrown and smashed into a cardboard box, along with his sneakers, his plane ticket stub, and his pocket Bible.

Apparently, they haven't gone over crisp corners and folding your uniforms up there yet.

So, yes, I was laughing. Hysterically.

Because that box looked and smelled exactly like the five-foot radius around my laundry hamper did when my husband was home.

That box held the source of many an argument, many an eye roll, and many a resigned moment for me, as a woman married to a guy who literally took so many dirty socks off at his computer desk, day after day, that I once found 43 of them shoved under the thing, just waiting for the maid - er - the lady of the house, to rescue them and clean them up.

That box was the essence of his inner, messy being. All shoved into one cubic foot of cardboard.

That box was my husband - my dirty, unorganized, sometimes smelly husband.

That box was him to a tee.

I did shed a few tears in my laughter. I even sniffed his stinky shirt and smiled.

But then, like any wife married to a dirty, unorganized, sometimes smelly man, I bundled up his soiled laundry, chucked it in the washing machine, and shook my head.

Because something tells me that the United States Navy isn't going to rid my man of every bad habit he has.

And something tells me this won't be the last load of crumpled man laundry I'm going to do.

Let's just hope the next load doesn't have to be air-mailed to my doorstep.

Happy Friday everyone! Hope your weekend is wonderful!

You never know!! He probably shoved the clothes in the box because they gave him 20 seconds to pack it. I know that my husband is very neat, fantastic at laundry (and still insists on doing his own!), and is a much better ironer than I am. Don't worry, there's still hope for Patrick!

Funny! In a sad kind of a way.

That sounds like the man you wrote about while he was at home so I think this is a good thing. They haven't changed him too much and you know he actually packed the box himself. lol

I know you miss him, terribly. I love you both for making this sacrifice. You are braver and stronger than I am.

My brother just graduated from Navy boot camp a month ago. It will go by so much more quickly than you think! And hopefully he will have a good Chief who will allow him to call home often. Praying for you that this goes by quickly!

Oh I wish I'd read this before my Fabulous Friday post. It would have been in there for sure!

Never running out of blog content? Good!

Having funny stories to laugh at? Great!

Stinky, smelly man clothes mailed to your home? PRICELESS!!!

This made me cry. You are so strong but I just really want to give you a great big hug!! At least you'll have clean laundry for a few months and maybe he'll even help out with it when he gets home. :) XOXO

as weird as a dirty box of laundry is...I bet it was comforting, too :)

Nothing like a box full of smelly laundry to say I love you?! :) Lol... As you said, his own way he is showing you that he cares and needs you.

They take everything from him? Even his Bible?

I've been following your blog. Love it. And I just have to say ... it gets worse. Just wait until they have those week long ops and they aren't allowed to shower. The Navy will not cure your man of his bad habits and may actually give him worse ones :) Like not showering all the time and forgetting to brush his teeth a lot. Hang in there!

At least you got a little piece of him in the mail and even though it was stinky, it has to be sort of comforting too :) I hope you have a fun and busy weekend!

That is kinda funny. I'm always amused by the different bootcamp stories from the different branches. I was in the Coast Guard. In our first few days they went through all of our belongings item by item, in front of everyone and told us what we could keep and couldn't keep, after that, I think they stored the unauthorized items and our civilian cloths in some unknown location until we graduated. They let me keep a few pictures but not without going through them and making snarky comments first.

You are handling things great. Keep it up, time flies fast.

That made me giggle. :)

You're doing great! I know it's not easy to be apart, but you're doing so well! Hope you have a great weekend!!

Cute post! :) I guess getting "man-mail" was bittersweet. Hang in there! Just hope he's not becoming a submariner, because their clothes stink even more! Combo of man stink and this chemical from the submarine! haha Have a good weekend.

The Navy makes the habits worse. SO MUCH WORSE. And it gives them tons of excuses, the paramount being "you don't know what it's like for me."

I have had to pick up one too many metaphorical dirty sailor sock piles this week. I wish I could send him back to the barracks.

Just think...you're ten days down from this deal. And this cracks me up that he wadded things up. Also, did the Navy give him a new pocket Bible?

That is really cute and funny!

Men. *eye roll* I bet it was nice to get a little something from him, even if it was dirty laundry. Haha

Oh wow. Such is married life, I suppose:) I love it.

And I am a high school teacher, too! Yeah!

Oh dear :-) I think I would have laughed hysterically just like you did. I hope you get at least a phone call soon, love! XOXO

This made me chuckle! That's great to take the time to appreciate what can annoy us...so essential in a marriage!

What a great package! I admit, I never mind doing my hubby's laundry....because at least he's home when I'm doing it. The worst was when he had come home after a 2 week stint "in the field" where they had to spend the night in the pouring rain the first 2 nights...it was the grossest smell ever to empty that 2 week old stale clothes bag! Uggg, so glad you got to do his laundry one more time :-) I can't wait until Brandon comes home and I can wash all 8 months worth of clothes! (somehow every time he comes home he wants everything rewashed and folded by me...even if he did laundry before he threw it in the suitcase!) Congrats on your first 10-12 days! You're doing it!!! Oh, and once Army Wives starts back up on Lifetime, it will help the time pass to count down the weeks :-)

awwww I think I would have laughed and cried at receiving that box... You, my friend, are very strong... :) Sending blog hugs...

aww, I love it! Stay strong!! :)

wanna know something sick? i probably wouldn't have washed them so quick. as gross as it is, i really enjoy the smell of a boy i love..so i probably would have kept them around a little longer for the occasional sniff..but then again, i don't know just hot stinky your husband is..

sorry you're sad love! still thinking and praying about you!
